Those baptized as infants or small children who have reached middle school age or higher (13 and above) are invited to attend a class taught by Father Matt in preparation for confirmation. Confirmation is then held by one of the bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of New York during a visit or at the Cathedral of St John the Divine. The classwork goes on for a period of one to two years and involves learning about the Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, and what it means to be a follower and disciple of Jesus Christ today. Confirmands must memorize the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, as well as the Nicene Creed. But more than that, they must talk with one another, engage in community service and participate in worship, by singing, serving as acolyte or in other ways. The purpose is not to try and make you conform to the church's doctrines and disciplines, but to confirm that this is indeed a way of life that you choose to follow. This is an opportunity to make your parents' church your church.
Confirmation is also for those who never were confirmed as children--for those baptized as adults or instructed in other Christian traditions. If you would like to be confirmed into the Episcopal Church, or received (for those confirmed in the Roman Catholic or Orthodox Church), or even if you feel it is time to renew your baptismal vows, you can contact Fr Matt through the office and arrange for instruction and a guided course of preparation. |
In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop. - The Book of Common Prayer |
